Take advantage of government incentives

Incentive 1: Super co-contribution

How it works

If you make a personal contribution to your super, the government automatically gives eligible members some extra money into your super account too.

Example - How Alex was given $300

Alex is in second last year of studying engineering and earns $18,000. He decides to transfer an extra $600 into his super account via BPAY. Easy.
That’s all Alex has to do, other than lodge his normal tax return.
Because he earns less than the lower threshold of $43,445 in FY2023-24, the government will add an extra 50% of Alex’s contribution to his super account. The ATO automatically deposits the extra $300 into his super account.
The government caps the co-contribution at $500.
Next financial year, Alex plans to deposit $1,000, so he gets the maximum possible co-contribution of $500.
Alex is just an example and not a real person.

Eligibility

  • Check that you earned less than $58,445 between 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024.
  • Check that you earned more than 10% of your total income from employment.
  • Make a personal contribution to your super account.
  • Lodge a tax return for the year you made a personal contribution.
Engineering Super will notify you if you get a co-contribution payment and it will appear on your Transactions page.
If you are curious about how much you’ll receive, the ATO has a super co-contributions calculator.

Don’t leave it until the last minute!

To make sure we receive and allocate your personal contribution before the end of the financial year, make your BPAY transfer at least 7 days before the end of the financial year.

Incentive 2: Low Income Tax Offset (LISTO)

As long as you have your TFN added to your super account, and eligible members will receive the LISTO incentive automatically.

Eligibility

  • Have received concessional (before-tax) contributions for the year into your super account (this includes employer contributions).
  • Lodge a tax return.
If you’re eligible and you have lodged your tax return, the ATO will automatically make a payment of up to $500 back into your super account.
Engineering Super will notify you if you get a LISTO payment and it will appear on your Transactions page.
