Recently a number of superannuation funds were impacted by a cyber fraud crime. Although Engineering Super wasn’t impacted, we thought this was a good time to provide you with some helpful tips on protecting your online accounts and maintaining strong password hygiene.
In today's digital landscape, strong passwords make up a critical element in your first line of defence against unauthorised access. By taking a few simple steps, you can significantly enhance the security of your online accounts.
Check out the 5 helpful tips below:
1. Use a passphrase
A passphrase uses four or more random words as your password. For example, ‘crystal onion clay pretzel’ or 'red house sky train'. The longer the passphrase, the harder it is for adversaries to crack as length trumps complexity.
2. Use a unique password
Avoid using the same or variation of a password for multiple accounts, as compromising one account could lead to access to others.
3. Use multi-factor authentication
Always enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) where available to further strengthen your account protection.
4. Password lifecycle
Consider changing your password throughout its usage life to reduce the likelihood of compromise.
5. Breached password detection
Consider reviewing if your password has been seen in an unrelated publicly available data breach. You can check whether your password has potentially been compromised at:
One last reminder to help you safeguard your account is do not click on attachments or links in emails or messages you’ve received, unless you are certain of the sender. Double-check the sender’s email address and/or phone number before proceeding.
